The song was included on Trainor"s first EP, Title (2014), and first major-label studio album, also named Title (2015). It was written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, and was produced by Kadish. "All About That Bass" combines bubblegum pop, doo-wop and retro-R&B genres, and incorporates elements from 1960s music. Lyrically, Trainor intended the song to promote positive body image and self-acceptance. The song was noted for discussing "booty" as part of physical attractiveness.
